Josephine simply could not stand dancing any longer. She sat down with the wallflowers and read from her book for a short while. She might have felt worse about standing up the gentleman whose name was on her card if she had not seen him whirling about with Cordelia.
However, she heard an odd noise and looked up from her book just in time to notice someone running up to her and Emily, of all people, in pursuit. Jo stuck out her silk-slippered foot and tripped the fellow. Then she watched in amazement as her shyest sister became the belle of the ball for apprehending a thief. Emily’s red face made her wonder, though, if the poor girl really appreciated the honor.
Jo was surprised to come in for a modest share of glory, as a bystander pointed out how she had helped.
