Tom, George, and Cordelia kept talking. Unfortunately, Tom wandered off. Cordelia was annoyed when she noticed this, because now she and George, Tom’s older brother, might be considered by some gossips to be in a compromising position. The stableboy walked in while the two of them were discussing what to do, and didn’t believe her friend when George said Tom was there as well.

In fact, the stableboy dared to ask for money to keep matters quiet! Cordelia was outraged. The hired man was also a neighbor, and had clearly forgotten his place. George was also angry, and struck the bounder while telling him to keep his fool mouth shut.

“I’ll go to the ballroom first,” Cordelia said, fanning herself. The night was warm and her face was warmer. “If you show up later, from another entrance, it will be difficult for Rob here to make trouble.” She directed her next remarks to the idiot now pulling himself up from the floor and rubbing his jaw. “It will be two against one, if you say anything, Rob. If we mention you tried to make us give you money, this will be the last time you work in anyone’s stables, not just ours.”

She left the outbuilding, detoured near the gardens to air out just a bit, and went back into the ballroom.
