Cordelia stood in the ballroom, bored to tears. She regretted being nice to callow young men who had few other interests besides how well their valets could tie their cravats. That idiotic subaltern fresh from Spain began to look better in comparison.

Jo approached her. “I can’t dance with this one! I can’t! All he wants to do is to talk about horses and riding, and he’s the third one like that. We know him already anyway. Here, you take him!”

Cordelia gratefully accepted, and was pleasantly surprised to find her new partner was George. They smiled at each other and pretended they hadn’t met in the stables. Jo appeared happy enough haranguing Mr. Dominic, who had finally arrived, while he scowled back. Frankly, they deserved each other, and she wondered when the two of them would realize it.

That wasn’t her problem. The music started. She and George smiled at each other, and continued their conversation from earlier in the evening.
